Old No. 7
.
is a reminder of days when Long Leaf pines were great moneymakers,
and small narrow gauge engines like this one brought slow growing wood to market.

im and Lori Bonzagni are originally from Springfield, Massachusetts, but arrived in Hardeeville via five years spent in Sedona, Arizona. The couple researched the Internet and settled on the area between Charleston and Savannah.

“Sedona is very beautiful but extremely dry, and we decided we wanted to move back to the East Coast and closer to the ocean,” explained Jim Bonzagni from his new home at the community of Tradition.
“We wanted to live within one-half hour of an airport,” he said, adding that from their house, the beach is just a 20-25 minute drive away. The moderate, temperate climate was a plus, and they liked the growing area.
“We chose the community of Tradition because it’s going to have everything we want in our community – namely the swimming pool and fitness center and golf. The main selling point for us is the community center, which will have a brewery, pizza parlor, multiple retail offices, physicians, and lots more.”

Mr. Bonzagni is delighted that they’ll be able to use their golf cart to go shopping for groceries or other needed household items, as well as to play golf. “Our community will become quite the social center,” he added.

For now, they are exploring their new surroundings, visiting local restaurants, playing more golf and learning about an unexpected plus. “One nice thing is the level of health care around here and in Savannah,” he said. They also enjoyed nearby Beaufort’s Christmas Boat Show, and the friendliness of the folks in Hardeeville.
“Everybody is friendly here,” he explained. Their primary physician was recommended by people in the office at Tradition and they appreciate the local connections, which are growing every week.
Hardeeville is a town on the move, as evidenced by the enthusiasm of Core Communities, Tradition’s planners. They brought their vision here, in part because of the amenities nearby and the natural beauty of the area.

Once a summer retreat for wealthy plantation owners, this is a town looking toward the future, even as it seeks to protect the lifestyle that residents cherish. |

Until colonial times, the area was home to Yemassee and Coosaw Indians. Later, Swiss-German immigrants arrived, followed by settlers who built large rice plantations. Some of those large tracts of land are now part of the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to hardwoods, migratory wading birds and waterfowl.
Sergeant Jasper Park is owned by the county and includes 132 acres of picnic areas, walking trails and fishing lakes. The town’s boat landing provides easy access to the Savannah River. Just minutes from I-95 as well as nearby beaches, Hilton Head, Savannah, Georgia and Beaufort, the area features hundreds of restaurants, great shopping and entertainment, and fantastic health care.
In late October, the entire town enjoys Celebrate Hardeeville, a festival for the entire family.
Because the area has long welcomed visitors on their way to somewhere else, that friendliness now translates into the same
welcoming attitude toward families choosing this as their new home. Perhaps that attitude of civility was what inspired native son Henry Martyn Robert to write
Robert’s Rules of Order,
which still remains as the best resource for how to conduct meetings.
