Locals rave that they live in the best town in America, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and just 15 minutes east of Asheville.
“Seeing the lovely town of Black Mountain, surrounded by the glory of nature, reminded us of an earlier America: beautiful, pristine and untouched,” explained Bill Barber. “We strolled through the town and marveled at the many interesting stores, shops and restaurants.” Mr. Barber and his wife, Renee Key, were convinced.

Many visitors come to Black Mountain simply for the numerous unique and specialty shops in the historic district of downtown.
Regional arts and crafts are plentiful and the town is known for its antique and new furniture stores. Downtown is also home to the Black Mountain Center for the Arts, which offers art exhibits, a pottery studio, workshops, concerts and theatre productions.
Right next door is the Swannanoa Valley Museum which educates the community about the area’s history with exhibits, a library, tours and events.
Black Mountain offers activities for all ages and interests. Locals and visitors alike enjoy Lake Tomahawk, the town’s park, where you may fish or boat on the lake, walk or jog on the groomed path, play tennis or enjoy the playground. Lake Tomahawk is home to many of the town’s annual events, including a concert series, Park Rhythms, in the summer and Circle of Lights in December. Just beside Lake Tomahawk is the Black Mountain Golf Course – an 18-hole course for the diehard golfer with the longest municipal hole in the world, a 747-yard par six hole.

Many visitors who come to Black Mountain are interested in hiking, biking and enjoying the gorgeous foliage and mountain scenery. Trails are located within minutes of downtown.
They vary in skill level, from an hour’s easy hike to Lookout Point to an all-day strenuous trek across the Seven Sisters mountain range. And if a challenge is really needed, why not consider the Black Mountain Marathon and Mount Mitchell Challenge, held every February?
Black Mountain offers its guests a variety of lodging options including country inns, bed and breakfasts, private cabins, hotels and motels. The town is home to The Red Rocker Inn and Monte Vista Hotel, both nationally-acclaimed historic landmarks. Other noteworthy accommodations include Raspberry Hill Bed and Breakfast, Inn Around the Corner and Bella Luna Inn.
