he spirit of volunteerism, civic pride, and responsibility run deep in this small town. The stately Greek Revival county courthouse sits in the center of the downtown area.

The town is only 40 minutes from the popular Lake Norman. The eastern border of Lincoln County follows the shoreline of the region's largest lake with 520 miles of shoreline. A Rails to Trails walking trail is popular, and residents can enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities at the Betty Ross Park. The Denver Mountain Bike and Running Trail recently opened in nearby Denver.

Many of the old Federal-style homes in the historic district have been restored or preserved. The county is the only one in North Carolina to have six churches listed on the National Register of Historic Places. No one company dominates the local economy and the community has done a good job in attracting well-known national and international companies to invest in plants in the area. The cost of living is lower than the national average. Gaston College is augmented by eight colleges and universities within forty-five miles. Among the better known are Davidson College and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
