Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

Since 1986, Donna and John Mahoney and their family have owned and operated J. Arthur’s, a traditional country restaurant in Western North Carolina, in the heart of beautiful Maggie Valley. It’s near the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Visit them soon.

Makes 28 Appetizers

1¼ lbs mozzarella cheese

Mix #1
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg

Mix #2
¾ cup flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon garlic salt
¼ teaspoon MSG (optional)

Mix #3
1 cup Japanese bread crumbs
¼ cup cracker meal
1½ teaspoon Lawry’s seasoned salt

Oil for frying

Marinara sauce

Cut block of mozzarella cheese into half-inch-thick slices. Cut each slice into four half-inch fingers or sticks. For each mix, combine ingredients and mix thoroughly.

Separate cheese sticks and place in Mix #1, covering cheese with mixture. Remove cheese sticks from Mix #1 and place in Mix #2, covering each stick thoroughly. Remove from Mix #2 and return to Mix #1, making sure that cheese sticks are moist. Remove from Mix #1 and place in Mix #3, pressing crumbs firmly onto cheese sticks.

Deep fry cheese sticks until golden brown, in oil heated to 350 degrees. Do not overcook. Drain on paper towels. Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping.
